Inspecting Levees Before Heavy Rainfall
Carmen Argueta is a Board member at the Mangrove Association. She has been part of La Coordinadora for over ten years and is one of many women assuming leadership roles in the area.
Members from Mangrove Association and La Coordinadora toured the levees in the Bajo Lempa last week to check on conditions in an effort to ask for improvements before the heavy rain begins to fall. What they found was plenty of deterioration. The majority of damage was caused by erosion due massive amounts of water flow, while some was due to cattle and caves made by armadillos.
After the tour, Walberto Gallegos from the Mangrove Association presented results to various organizations and government agencies that make up a working group formed to address these very issues. Walberto urged that these levees be repaired immediately, as the rainy season is now upon them. Plans are underway to repair these levees before the heavy rain begins to fall.
